COURSE DESCRIPTION

This French immersion course designed so students with varying levels of French proficiency will improve their level of comprehension and speaking in addition to gaining an exposure and appreciation of the culture of the French West Indies, particularly Guadeloupe. In addition to formal language instruction, students will experience different aspects of the French West Indies through history lessons, various cultural workshops, an oral history project, a week living with a local family in the town of Sainte Anne and participating in community service work with local youth.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Gain an increased understanding of French grammar and vocabulary.
  • Have a better grasp of conversational French language.
  • Complete an Oral History project, interviewing at least three locals on a topic of the students choosing.
  • The Oral History project will be presented to student peers while on program and will be submitted in writing.

FIELD STUDIES & EXERCISES

  • French West Indian culture including traditional dance, music and cooking
  • Basic Caribbean history; specifically, how Guadeloupe’s unique culture and race relations developed out of this history
  • History of French Creole
  • Basic Caribbean island ecology
