From Vancouver, head to the city of Nanaimo for a quick overnight. This centrally located ”Hub City” is your gateway to ultra-rugged Vancouver Island. No one chooses this Broadreach trip by accident. There’s a reason why you were drawn here, and a kayak expedition in the Deer Group Islands off the coast of Bamfield may provide a few clues. Beach landings. Sea caves. Incredible wildlife. It’s all here. Next, trade paddles for research at the Bamfield Marine Science Centre.
Bamfield is a charming fishing village on the western side of Vancouver Island. It’s also where eager scientists come to dive deep into the study of marine mammals — a sacred place, for those who worship whales, dolphins and seals. From Bamfield, we venture to Port Alberni to explore the south-central heart of Vancouver Island. Then onward, to Telegraph Cove, where we whale watch the Broadreach way — not as tourists, but as naturalists-in-training, mindful of marine habitats.
“I found the program overall to be amazing and well organized.” — Susan Herlong, Sullivans Island, SC
The Johnstone Strait slices through the east coast of Vancouver Island and mainland BC. Beyond the numerous killer whales, keep an eye out for the humpbacks, greys and dolphins that flock here, too. Before we return home, we reflect on how much we’ve grown both personally and as marine scientists.
