My favorite parts of the trip were camp-cooking, because we all made some awesome meals; kayaking, because being out on the water was super fun and really exciting when we got to be semi-close to the mammals in their environments; the week at Bamfield, because we got lots of exposure to certain types of field work, and we got to give back to the instructors by creating a project for them to use in the future; and the whale-watching out of Telegraph Cove, because Captain Wayne and his team are awesome and we got to spend lots of time on the water and see many marine mammals. Best part of the trip: the humpback whale named Aerial who put on a show for us by breaching in front of us for 10 minutes, and then being surprised when her travel companion popped up right next to the boat. Challenged closely by listening to the group of orcas chatting late at night right next to our campsite. This trip was amazing because of the bonding that occurred between us all. Since we were all far from home, and some of us were completely out of our element with the camping, we all got really close and were able to share our frustrations and excitements with each other. Also, we all had the love of marine mammals in common, and we could share in the elation of being able to be near the animals in their natural environment.”— Erin W (age 21)
